In 1923 Mahlon Blaine burst upon the art scene with striking works of imagination and vision. Within a short time his work was published in everything ranging from children's books and mainstream magazines to erotic portfolios. The body of work he produced between 1926 and 1930 was nothing short of phenomenal but after 1931 his output became increasingly sporadic. Sadly like so many artists before him who have given us so much, Blaine died penniless and mostly forgotten in January of 1969. This volume samples Mahlon Blaine's unique artistic visions, from his grand emergence in the roaring 20's through his declining years in the swinging 60's. Words of praise for this volume "This is an overdue recognition of Blaine's fine eye for details in his drawings. You have presented his work in chronological order, which shows his development over the years, giving us an insight into his imaginative art. I am happy to see this fine volume in print."-Helen de la Ree

But I mean that in a good way.... I have been collecting Mahlon Blaine books for forty years and have several feet of shelf space full of them. Brian Hunt has found and published beautifully quite a lot of illustrations that I had never seen. Another collector told me that with this book he need look no further for books illustrated by Mahlon Blaine. Blaine had a unique style and vision - from the first I saw of his illustrations I knew I wanted more. I had the same reaction to Mervyn Peake, Sidney Sime, Wallace Smith. The past is another country - and they drew better there.Product details

The Outlandish Art of Mahlon Blaine Brian J Hunt 9780578043852 Books Reviews
Brian J. Hunt has certainly overachieved with this effort. And that's a good thing. I actually counted the drawings in here, and with 617 large and clear examples he has reprinted about 30 percent of all the Mahlon Blaine drawings published during Blaine's lifetime. That's a lot. He has also reprinted some of the earlier literature about Blaine, and it's helpful to have this information in the same place as the artworks themselves. I don't think that this is the last word on the artist, and although this fine volume gives folks a swell and huge sampling of MB in a well designed and edited book, additional scholarship and publishing will follow. Blaine had a 50-plus year career, creating 2000 published illustrations and probably at least 2000 unpublished works. I have just published the updated biography/bibliography of Blaine,[...], with 350 illustrations not seen here. I suggest getting both books and start appreciating a woefully under-appreciated artist/illustrator Mahlon Blaine.
Good selection of Blaine's work. Wish there was a hardcover edition instead of just paper. Many works I have never seen.
