Seven Seeds of Summer Chantal Gadoury Books Reviews
I received this book from the publisher in exchange for a honest review
Seven Seeds of Summer was an excellent book, it had a great plot, suspense, and a great love story. What was great about it was that we had time to get to know Summer and see the relationship bloom from her and her mysterious man. When tragedy strikes in Greece we feel for Summer, I really felt bad for her and wanted things to be ok for her. Pretty much once we get to Greece the action and suspense kicks in, the mystery of Hades and Persephone that was set up was great, I thought it was going to go one way but it when another that when you go back to the beginning of the book makes sense. The one thing that was a minor complaint was that when we get to the climax of the book it feels too rushed, it was almost like we should have saved that part of the book for a sequel, Ms. Gadoury wrote a wonderful story, that when I got the book I started reading it and finished it the same day, it was that good. I look forward to more from Ms. Gadoury.
I was startled by the depth and substance in this book. It’s very unique in the sense that it contains a knowledge and mystery that I never got from most of the books I’ve read. The usage of words, the depiction of setting, the haunting feeling I get from the dialogue of the characters is consuming.
The story starts with a girl named Summer who was hanging out with her friend Maggie. This was a school day, and like all usual school days, everything was pretty normal. She got into the car with her mother, and her mother discussed how she should be more social and try to live a life outside her studio in school. Her mother told her she was special and had gifts, but Summer didn’t believe it too much. Eventually they got into a conversation about Summer’s appreciation to Greek gods and goddesses and Greek mythology. The very odd and uniquely interesting thing about this story, is that Summer’s appreciation went mostly to Hades, the god of the underworld. Summer told her mother, “If you remember right, Zeus took the Universe, Poseidon chose the oceans, and Hades was left with only the Underworld.” This was such a unique perspective, coming to admire the god of the underworld! That’s what made me love this book more.
Eventually, while walking down the street one night, a stranger was following her. She couldn’t tell who it was, and she was trying to escape the ‘figure’ who was following her. Within moments, the figure started to talk and knew her name. After that the same figure met her in her room, and that’s where they talked. Until then, she didn’t know who he/she was. That was when she finally knew who he was, it was Hades. Hades told her that he knew her more than anyone else did, and that he needs her to come with him for a month far away. She didn’t agree in the beginning, but he said that he will keep coming back until she does. With time, Summer spends more time with Hades, learning more about his secrets, and about the knowledge that he carries. She learns things from him that she never imagined she would have learned before then.
What I’ve learned is that this story has a lot of depth to it, and I was deeply impressed by the author’s knowledge of things that are both ancient and interesting. When Hades was talking, I really felt as though it was Hades! The usage of words for Hades really made him look like he was the god of the ancient times.
This is a must read for anyone interested in mythology, but more than that, wanting to know how a god really acts, thinks and talks. Read the first chapter and you will be hooked!
Im a 25 year old male. I loved this book. The twist and turns. The character development. I loved everything about this debut book from Chantel Gadoury.
