I'm teaching this text in one of my undergraduate courses right now. It's difficult in some ways because of Cooper's use of highly specialized maritime terms. I've had to look up more things that I'd like to admit. But if you're at all interested in one of the first, truly "American" sea stories, you shouldn't skip out on this one just because of its length or difficulty. It's theatrical, exciting -- a page-turner at times, and has several surprises at the end.Tags : The Red Rover [James Fenimore Cooper] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. The Red Rover James Fenimore Cooper 9781426446856 Books Reviews
If you can get past Cooper's verbose and stilted prose, this is a great love letter to the skilled mariners who manned the decks during the Golden Age of Sail. Probably a full quarter of the book is devoted to depicting the moment-by-moment changes in rigging and tactics for both fight and flight in fickle weather. And that stands alone as the sole basis on which I recommend this book.
The tale is a fairly formulaic and romantic account of what amounts to just over a fortnight in the life of a gentleman pirate who commands a noble if motley crew, and the dashing young officer of the British Navy who is assigned to apprehend him in the Americas. Predictably, the protagonist finds more to admire than despise in his quarry, and the generosity & civility of the Red Rover is shown to exceed that of many commisioned sailors in service to the Crown.

I enjoy Coopers books. So far they have all been great. This one was a little predictable and slow, but I did enjoy it.
This story is terribly long for so little to happen. The language has a flowery British flair that gets old pretty quick and hard to follow at points. The story line has some incredible consequences that were just poor and unexplained. The free read cost me dearly.
