I enjoyed this interesting collection of short stories about World War II by women writers of the period. An introduction by editor Anne Boston sets the historical context and provides background on the women authors and the themes they explored, including love, separation, xenophobia, sacrifice, fear, grief, endurance. Among my favorite stories were Barbara Pym's "Goodbye Balkan Capital" about a woman's obsession with her phantom lover; Ann Chadwick's "The Sailor's Wife" in which a woman desperately seeks housing for herself and her infant; and Margery Sharpe's "Night Engagement" in which a match-making mum tells about the felicitous meeting of her daughter with an eligible young man in a bombed-out cellar.

There are other, more well-known stories such as "Mysterious Kor" by Elizabeth Bowen, "Miss Anstruther's Letters" by Rose Macaulay, and "The Lovely Leave" by Dorothy Parker. Other writers represented are Elizabeth Taylor, Jan Struther, Rosamond Lehmann, Kay Boyle, Olivia Manning, Jean Rhys, Sylvia Townsend Warner, Doris Lessing, Inez Holden, Beryl Bainbridge, Edna Ferber, Anna Kavan, Jean Stafford and Stevie Smith. Only four of the 28 stories were baffling or disappointing to me, so for the most part this is a good collection for readers interested in women writers and/or World War II. Reading Millions like Us : British Women's Fiction of the Second World War by Jenny Hartley enhanced my appreciation of the stories in "Wave Me Goodbye."

Great book. Many different styles of writing and many different types of life experiences. Feels true to life and I found it fascinating.
This is a very interesting collection of short stories, all written by women during the Second World War. Most of the women were British authors, some of them very well known and popular in their time, and undeservedlly forgotten or obscure today. I am doing a general study of WWII in Europe, so I have some recent reading to help me catch most of the topical and social references made on the stories. American readers need to keep in mind that these stories were for the most part written during a war in which England was bombed by the Germans for years, and lost tens of thousands of citizens in their cities. So the writing is usually very vivid and focused on the experiences that the women endured during the war years of 1939 to 1945. I highly recommend this collection!
