Glimmerglass Faeriewalker Book 1 Jenna Black Books

This book was really a treat. I'm a big fan of faerie books (actually a bit of a junkie). This book was really a unique take on faerie mythology. In this one, Avalon and Faerie exist, but mortals are aware of it and can actually go to Avalon. Avalon becomes this little vacation town for mortals complete with Starbucks, Gap, and Victoria Secrets. I got a little chuckle when a person walked by wearing an I love Avalon t-shirt.

Jenna Black provides a wide list of interesting characters both flawed and likeable. Dana Hathaway is very relatable. It was very easy to cheer for her and she wasn't depressing even though she had a lot to deal with. Ethan is an interesting love interest because you're constantly wondering about his motives. Also, he's a gorgeous fae and the romantic scenes are HOT, HOT, HOT! Because of that, I found myself rooting for him even after I found out he did something wicked. Ethan's sister, Dana's Aunt, and Dana's Dad are equally interesting.

The faerie politics provide lots of twists and turns leaving the reader questioning pretty much everything. The back-story is given to the reader in small pieces so I never felt overwhelmed. This is really a fantastic read and I will definitely be reading the two follow-up novels.

Glimmerglass Faeriewalker Book 1 Jenna Black Books Reviews

So, I have to admit, I totally judged this book by its cover. I think the cover is BEAUTIFUL and so I went ahead and bought this book....even though starting yet another YA series about the fae was something I probably should have avoided. I didn't expect a lot when I started the book. But it didn't take more than two chapters and I was hooked. I couldn't stop reading this book. I had to find out more, and more, and more.

"Glimmerglass" is the story of Dana, a half human/half Fae. Her father left long before Dana could meet him and her mother is now an alcoholic. Dana has had to be the head of her household for far to long. Fun? Nope. Friends? Nope. Super dysfunctional family? Check.

When her mother shows up super drunk to her voice recital, Dana has had enough. She packs her things and runs away to Avalon, the home of her father. Avalon is a place between the mortal (human) realm and the Fae world. Its the only place where human and fae can exist side by side. In the Fae World there are two courts...the Seelie and the UnSeelie. Yet in Avalon, both Seelie and UnSeelie have supposedly let go of those labels and live together semi-peacefully.

The first part of the book, is intense action as Dana is immediately kidnapped, maybe more than once, upon her arrival in Avalon. We never really know who to trust and this is a strength to the book, in a way. We never know more than Dana does. It seems that Dana's father is a very powerful Fae who is vying for a spot on the Cousel. There are many fae, or groups of fae, that would like Dana for various reasons.

There is a lovely scene or two of friendship that touched me. Dana had to move so often due to her mother (being drunk, and always hiding from Dana's father) that she never had a friend before. There may also be the start of a little love triangle (I know, if you are an avid reader of YA fantasy, you are probably over the love triangle too) but its not so much of one just yet. There is also no clear forerunner for Dana's heart. Ethan is an UnSeelie fae and that goes against the Seelie ties of Dana's father. We don't ever really know if we can trust Ethan. Then there is Keane, a young man brought in to tutor Dana in self-defense.

The story has enough action and posts enough little mysteries that it made for a very pleasant read. The resolution is good, but we are still left with some questions. It is very hard to not want the next book right now.

This is my first Jenna Black book but I have no intention of making it my last. I have to read the next book Shadowspell and also her adult urban fantasy stories.
Dana has never met her father. For as long as she can remember, she's been responsible for grocery shopping, cooking, check book balancing and bill paying. Dana has a secret she finds shameful her mother is an alcoholic who will not seek treatment...even for her daughter. Dana finally draws the line when her mother shows up drunk to a voice lesson recital. Dana is able to piece together enough information to figure out where her father lives and his name. From there, it's a quick Internet search and she has his phone number. Dana calls him and plans to meet him and probably stay with him to live if all goes well.

Dana really should have listened to her mother. There was a reason Dana hadn't met her father or gone on visits to the place where he lives, Avalon. Dana isn't just the normal human girl she thought she was. She's half Fae and to make it even more complicated, she may be a Faeriewalker. Faeriewalker's are a pretty powerful and special type of Fae. If a politician has the support of a Faeriewalker their position would almost be guaranteed. It also just so happens that Dana's homecoming coincides with the election of the Consul. One member of the Fae is elected as the Consul and there are three people gunning for that position. All three have their own strategies to acquire Dana and her status.

Dana is alone in Avalon and she must use her wits and instincts to decide who she should trust and who means her ill. It is a constant guessing game and one that Dana is tiring of quickly. Right now, life in the United States taking care of her drunken mother after a binge is starting to sound like a walk in the park!

If you have a teenage daughter or know a teenage girl who enjoys reading, you need to make sure she does not miss this book! Even an adult who enjoys the occasional young adult novel should not miss this book. Black sets the stage for a great series with the first book of in the Faeriewalker series. There is some great world-building without too much time being spent on minute details. Dana is a strong self-reliant heroine who you root for throughout the book. She has a strong sense of self and a level head. Political intrigue abounds in the span of 297 pages. I was riveted through most of it. I was busy trying to figure out who had which motives and why. Were these people Dana could trust or should she run for the hills? This book will leave you breathless wondering what is going to happen to Dana and you'll find the novel is over much sooner than you would have wanted.
