The more Rendell I read, the more I come to think of her as "Iris Murdoch lite." While Murdoch is unapologetically a philosopher, and her novels inhabit their own created sphere where the kinds of things happen that will happen only in Iris Murdoch's novels, Rendell is a subterranean philosopher, whose stories exist to explore concepts of ethics, morality, and behavior, but her agenda puts an antic disposition on and disguises itself as unusually intelligent genre fiction.

This doesn't really work, mostly because every single plot point is blatantly obvious from Page One. There were no surprises whatsoever in this book, and it is a testament to the "Iris Murdoch lite" aspect of Rendell's writing that despite this, the book was completely readable and compelling once we got past the awkward first chapter, which was one of the most painfully obvious set-up pieces I've ever read in any novel, ever, complete with a Chekhov's gun that was still warm and smoking, and a structure as obvious as a skeleton in a science lab.

But you'll note--I kept reading, and I gave this four stars. There are many reasons for this, from the incredibly delicate exploration of parent/child relationships to the equally delicate examination of midlife romance, and the chilling examination of the ways in which passion makes people incredibly stupid. I also enjoyed the gender-switching aspect of this novel; in most thrillers of this kind, a woman is in thrall to a charismatic man, and it was nice to see this trope believably reversed.

Recommended, with a caveat: You'll be tempted to give up soon after you start, but give it time. Your patience will be rewarded.

I enjoyed this, but I prefer Rendell when she works from multiple perspectives in building the ultimate shocker -- I got a little tired of the protagonist. The interplay between lies and truths within them was engaging.
Another great read by Ruth Rendell. Was a bit slow going there at first, but picked up pace beautifully. Excellent!
Love Rendell's books but this story ran out of steam and became so confusing by the end that I had to stop reading.
To me none of the characters were likable or had redeeming qualities so it was very hard for me to be invested into them or the story line. I made myself read the entire book but just did not like it at all.
As always, Rendell writes a psychological thriller that's absorbing and suspenseful, with interesting characters. The setting is present-day London, and to?e from character Phi!ilp's viewpoint. A very good read, although it feels like it ends abruptly, after having developed several subplots which apparently were superfluous to the story's conclusion.
I love Rendell's books and have read most of them, so I dragged myself through the last half of this book certain that something interesting would happen. Nope. She got an idea and just couldn't give up on it when it became clear it wasn't going anywhere. Read her old stuff, not this.
